A Craft Space Before and After (Using Ikea’s Hemnes Book Shelves)

I’m really not sure if this is third trimester nesting kicking in or my husband and me accepting the reality that my craft & sewing supplies are here to stay.

When I started sewing around the 2007 time frame, I had no idea how much joy it’d bring me almost ten years later as a stay at home mom. Lifelong learning is something great for all of us, and I’m thankful for the time and opportunity to continue growing creative skills.

Plus, my husband and I are both a bit surprised that my little hobby has grown into a teensy tiny business that I can pour into or set aside as time and life allows.

Our master bedroom is quite oversized, and we have changed around the sitting area many many times wondering how to best utilize that space in our master bedroom. After having children, we turned half of our bedroom into my sewing space.

This is what our space looked like last week. Like I mentioned above, we’ve learned my love for sewing is going no where soon. After opening an Etsy Shop six months ago, I also accumulated some shipping supplies and additional fabric specifically for investing into my business. My husband and I agreed it was time to make this spot a bit more permanent and organized.

I wanted the look of built in book shelves, but we didn’t want to invest my husband’s time into building them. We searched a bit online for basic white bookshelves. No surprise, but we found what we were looking for at Ikea. These are Ikea’s Hemnes book shelves. We live about two and a half hours from the nearest Ikea. While visiting some family, we stopped in last weekend and picked these three sets up. (We were in and out of Ikea in less than 30 minutes!)

Much to our surprise, the shelves look a bit empty. Peter, my husband, actually commented today that he figured I had amassed more fabric. 🙂 (Believe me, I have plenty.)

I’ve enjoyed pulling some of my favorite pieces from other areas of the home and using them for holding packing supplies or basting pins or twine or other small craft supplies. Hopefully the shelves stay uncluttered for a while.

While I wish I had more time to sew and create and learn, I wouldn’t change our phase of life for anything. Our oldest son is three and we spend lots of time encouraging him to create and play and learn. We want our home to be a place where learning is a lifelong art, and we want to create an environment where creating can happen. We’re thankful for this space and thankful he can see his mommy learning and failing and learning and growing.
