A Custom Quilted Pillow Cover…with my Favorite Fruit Label Fabric

Sometimes someone asks for a custom order at just the right time.

I don’t get a lot of requests for custom orders, but I get a few a month. Usually they come via my Etsy shop, and usually they entail sewing their grandmother’s sheets together for a quilt. While saying ‘no’ to such a sweet request is hard, I have to decline almost every request for a custom order.

A couple weeks ago, I posted a stack of fabric on Instagram. Someone asked if I’d make them a pillow with fabrics from that stack. It was just the right time for a quick project. I’m in the midst of finishing up a few quilts, and I was in the mood for something I could finish easily.

It’s hard to believe, but I’ve ran two half marathons in my life. (I’m not a runner.) Running isn’t very enjoyable to me, but I trained diligently and successfully crossed the finish line in both races after thirteen miles. Finishing a quilt is kind of like running a half marathon for me. Parts of it I love. Other parts take diligence. Some parts are frustrating. Other parts are super enjoyable.

At the end, though, I absolutely love looking at a finished quilt. It’s kind of like crossing the finish line. I was ready to be done, but boy it felt good.

Well…when my customer asked for a custom pillow cover, it was kind of like she was asking if I’d take a night off from running and just go for a walk. A walk sounded real great.

Being that someone has to always be watching the kids, I asked my husband if he minded watching the boys so I could finish the pillow cover in a timely manner. And you know what, I finished the entire thing in one evening…almost in one sitting. It was great being able to finish a cover and ship it off.

Any other quilters out there like me? You just LOVE looking at patchwork and browsing beautiful fabrics and matching them up and curating pretty bundles, but then sometimes it comes to actually cutting and trimming and ripping seams and finding blunt points and BASTING (oh basting is the worst), and you just have to push yourself to the end?

I guess there is very little in life that’s COMPLETELY fun. Most great reward only comes after some diligence and perseverance.

I’ll have to keep going because having a tall stack of quilts is one of my very favorite things.

I linked to two fabrics above. If you asked me today what my favorite fabric was, I’d tell you it’s my pink fruit label fabric and those Kerchief Girls. They’ve been my favorite for some time. The rest of these fabrics I purchased from SewStitchingHappy.

  1. I love this post. My favorite part that made me smile was “…it was kind of like she was asking if I’d take a night off from running and just go for a walk. A walk sounded real great.” 🙂 I aspire to quilt like you some day–your combinations are always spot on.
