About The Willow Market

Blog Family PicHi there! I’m Kelli. I’m a somewhat introverted, sensitive, very observant mom of three boys and a little girl. I am married to  Peter. That’s us. Pictured right there. I am an incredibly blessed wife.

We have decided to use this platform to chronicle my massive learning curve called quilting. Here you will find my journey as I run a little home business on Etsy. You’ll also see me taking lots of breaks from blogging as homeschooling takes over my life on a regular basis.

That is The Willow Market in a nutshell. If you care to read more about me, feel free to keep reading. 🙂

I like good, deep friendships. I can sit and chat for hours with the right ladies. Maybe I am a little awkward in conversation because I don’t do well with small talk. I ask a lot of questions when I don’t know someone well.

I have a degree in music. I love music. I have played piano since I was six years old, and I don’t have plans of stopping soon. I teach a few students at home duMe and my two year old son. ring the weekdays.

I have sewn two queen sized quilts and numerous baby sized quilts. I love patchwork. I am still discovering new ways to use a love for sewing and quilting as a means of serving others. If you asked me what I enjoy doing in my spare time, my first response would probably be exploring new fabrics and sewing.

You would be less than impressed with the clothes I wear. If I am not going anywhere for the day, you will likely find me in jeans and a t-shirt. I like wearing tennis shoes.

If you’d like to send me a note, you can email me at kelli (at) thewillowmarket.com. I’d really enjoy hearing from you.

  1. Beautiful tips. I just started quilting few months ago,I am ex banker so didn’t had any time earlier. To learn new skills at this age is bit slow process but still I could make few baby quilts from waste fabric from left out by local tailor. I am into recycling of wastage like recycling fabric , used footwear and recycling kitchen waste into compost. So used left out fabric. Now I am making masks for charity and already stitched and donated above 100 masks to needy.
Thanks for your small tips. Appreciate it.

    1. Hi Vandana, I’m inspired by your endeavor to recycle used fabrics! I’ve done a bit of upcycling with vintage sheets and denim jeans, but I’ve never used footwear or waste fabrics from locals. Good for you!

  2. I just discovered you today and was so inspired about spray basting. It is so difficult to sandwich the layers, keep it smooth, no puckering, etc. And it is refreshing to read about someone not afraid to share their faith.

  3. Dear Kelli,

I just loved reading about your sweet family and the joys you share together by loving each other and the Lord. It’s so refreshing to see a young mother like you enjoying life and in spite of your busy life encouraging and helping others. And I so appreciate your honesty about your struggles with sewing and that you are self taught. That’s amazing and you must have a lot of talent and creative ability to make such beautiful quilted items. I looked at your site because I needed help with making a pillow out of scraps that I saved from the dresses I made my daughters when they were young. Now they have families of their own and I did make quilts for our grandsons out of denim and squares of train fabric and ship fabric with the help of a friend and they were machine stitched in a large machine in Iowa. They are 18 and 19 now and still use and love them. Our granddaughter is 14 and her quilt was made by a friend and machine quilted as well. I’ve saved all these scraps thinking I’d make a quilt for the girls but I’m getting older and have arthritis in my hands so will need to do it by machine. I’d forgotten so much so your directions were so helpful and I hope I can do some pillows or something simple not complicated. I was so frustrated trying to find a pattern and download instructions so it was great when I found you and it was simple to print off. Thank you and I was so glad to see you are a Christian and we have that in common. I’ve walked with the Lord most of my life and just couldn’t have made it without Him. I can see you are very positive and accomplish so much. Keep up the good work and I’m glad your parents live close by. That’s a blessing with young ones. Our family live close by in Arvada,Co. and we live in Boulder. It’s wonderful to be close by as we’re aging and so good to be close to the grandkids. The years fly by so quickly so enjoy every minute with your boys.

I’m hoping I can get the pillows done but we are facing health issues right now. Any suggestions for shot cuts would be great. I agree with what you say about squares and seams being perfect so I’ll do my best. You say you make pillows for sale and I wondered how much you charge or how you have time for that. Take care and God bless you all. And have a good year filled with God’s blessings. Thank you for caring and sharing. Diane Hasselquist E-mail is:rdhasselquist@comcast.net

    1. Hi Diane, aren’t you such an encourager! Thank you so much for your kind words. They’re so uplifting to me. I love this creative outlet, and I’m thankful you were able to find some help and inspiration here. It’s always a blessing to connect with another believer. It’s so sweet the immediate commonality that takes place when we both know we’re sinners saved by Jesus’ grace.

The pillows you are making with the scraps from you daughters’ dresses sound absolutely precious. What a treasure!

I fear I don’t have many short cuts for you, but I have learned that working with different mediums and textures of fabrics can be tricky at time. If the dresses are similar in texture to quilting cotton, they’d probably be simple to work with. If they are a silky or cotton jersey type texture, you may want to consider using interfacing on the back of the fabrics. Once you cut the squares or pieces for the pillow, the fabric will hold shape better with the interfacing.

I sell a few pillows here and there in my Etsy shop: http://tidd.ly/ec86538d

Once again, thank you for such a sweet comment. Feel free to email me anytime at thewillowmarket@gmail.com

  4. Hi Kelli, You said you were looking for ways to serve with your sewing/quilting. I make prayer quilts. I have prob made over 100 so far. They go to people with cancer, after the death of a loved one, heart surgery, etc… I wait for a tug at my heart to make one when I hear a prayer request. I pray over them when I am working on them. When I get finished, I take it to church and we all gather around it and pray over it before it goes out. They have went all over the US. While there is no power in fabric, there is comfort in knowing someone is thinking of you and praying for you. Just a thought.

    1. Hi Lorri, I appreciate this so much! What a thoughtful and heartfelt blessing to pour over someone in prayer. You are right, this is a wonderful way to continue pouring time into making quilts when making them is something I love so much.

  5. Hi Kelli! I just wanted to let you know that I love your creative bloggy/website! I aspire to have a beautiful site like yours. Sewing and being creative is where my heart is on my blog but I find it so hard to find the time with the kiddos and trying to create new content. That’s why I started to incorporate the kiddos into my blog. I love how clean a polished your site is. ITS BEAUTIFUL! good job!

    1. Hi Jenna, your site is beautiful! Thanks for the encouragement you left here.
