Ten Spring Inspired Sewing Projects

Flowers. Sunshine. Open windows. Sandboxes. Thunderstorms. Rainbows. Grilled food.

I’ve mentioned to my husband time and time again that a beautiful day seems to make all my worries disappear. I love having the windows open during the days. Peter has caught on and leaves me a wide open window in the breakfast nook every morning. We have a fairly quiet neighborhood in the mornings, and having the outside air inside makes for a good start to my morning.

With the relatively mild temperatures right now, it’s good to be outside as much as we can. The boys love the sand box right now. We bought Case a little bike with training wheels at a garage sale two weekends ago, and the newness hasn’t worn off yet. Cole, my one year old, just likes to be a mess. He’s our little adventurer, and it’s hard to bring him in without mud, or sand, or something caked all over his little hands and feet.

The long hours outside bring long hours of sleep for the boys. They’ve been sleeping in and taking long naps recently, and that leaves me plenty of time for sewing right now. My favorite colors and patterns in quilts usually include low volume blues, pinks, yellow, and greens. I always use multiple shades of white, and some gray and bits of black make their way into my quilts regularly too. In my mind, these colors are perfect for spring and summer.

Here are ten projects I have recently completed, and the colors on each of them make me think of spring! All of them are beginner friendly!

1. This scrappy quilted pillow cover was a great way to use up lots of scraps from my scrap bin. You can find a tutorial and all the tips I learned along the way in this post.

I’ve never really been a collector of vintage sheets, but you can find me walking the linen aisles of Salvation Army about twice a week right now.

I listed out all the tips I’ve learned so far here.

3. Learning how to sew with isosceles triangles took me a while. I was so frustrated when sewing my triangle quilt that I almost didn’t finish it. I had to take a step back, do some reading, and after lots of trial and error, I put out this post with everything I learned on my triangle journey.

This pillow is listed in my Etsy Shop. It’s quilted on both sides, and it’s color palette is perfect for spring. 🙂

4. I think this is currently my favorite quilt. It is exceedingly simple made with five inch blocks, but I still love this combination of fabrics. You can find all the details here.

5. I have been making bunting for a few years now, and I still haven’t grown tiresome of it. It can decorate up a room so easily, and it’s perfect for any little celebration. I have multiple colors and mediums of bunting tucked away in my cabinet. One comes out for birthdays. Another one comes out for piano recitals. Yet others I’ve cut from pictures my son has painted.

I created this tutorial a while ago. You can find all the steps you need to make your own homemade triangle bunting.

This yellow Farmer’s Market bunting pictured below can be found for sale in my shop.

6. If you are a beginner quilter looking for a simple pattern, this one may be a good choice. I made the quilt pictured below with the beginner friendly pattern. A throw sized quilt is a good size for a beginner project and that’s what I made with that precious fabric below. 🙂 This quilt is also listed in my shop.

You can also check out this tutorial if you are just learning how to cut blocks.

7. Believe it or not, this bib tutorial is by far the most popular post on my blog. If you’ve had a child who spits up all his milk during his first six months of life, you will understand why a super absorbent bib is really important. 🙂

8. When I first started making quilted pillow covers, I always used an envelope closure in the back. Zippers intimidated me. With a bit of help from my husband, we finally figured out the best method for my quilted pillow covers. I shared my method for a zipper installation here. I think the zippers are much easier and make for a better quality pillow.

This pillow is also in my shop.

9. Our back door had been curtainless for months. I couldn’t figure out what I wanted for a curtain. After buying the fabric for this quilt, I knew I wouldn’t mind seeing that combination of fabrics elsewhere in the house. Out came the first curtain I’ve attempted to sew from scratch. You can find my instructions here.

10. Finally, here is the largest quilt I’ve ever sewn. It actually fits into the dimensions of a king size quilt, but it fits perfectly for our pillow top queen sized bed. I used the same pattern I referenced above. It’s perfect for beginners. You can find the tutorial here.
