A Checkered Garden Quilt

I have four children right now. They are seven, five, three, and three months. A couple years ago, I finished an economy block quilt for my seven year old. I have sewn zero quilts for my other children.

Well, I have finished a few quilts for our living room, but I haven’t made any specifically for each of them.

My three year old, in particular, has taken a high degree of interest in my fabrics these days. My scrap bin is emptied on a regular basis right now by this little one. He picks out his favorites, goes to the kitchen to get a plastic baggie, then loads the baggie with his favorites. Usually a couple days later I find the abandoned baggie and return the scraps to their bin.

With a babe in arms right now, my sewing time is quite sporadic. Literally, I may sit down for seven or eight minutes at a time. Any extensive sewing is done in the evenings when my generous husband takes the children out on bike rides or walks.

Every time I sit for seven or eight minutes to sew during the days, my sweet three year old prances into the room. He wants to ensure I’m working on his quilt.

You should have seen his face the day he saw his blocks coming together. Once I had five or six of these blocks finished, I laid them out on the floor. He unexpectedly came in and saw that HIS quilt was coming together.

I’ve wanted an excuse for some time to sew a Checkered Garden quilt. I’m following a free tutorial by Ashley from Film in the Fridge. After the first two blocks, it’s smooth sailing. The pattern itself is very simple. The worst part is keeping track of what is fabric A, B, C, D, and E. Come up with your method of labeling your fabrics and you’re good to go.

You can see here a variety of Heather Ross prints I purchased a couple weeks ago. I bought almost all of them from Modern Violet on Etsy. Her shipping was super fast when I purchased them. If I remember correctly, she refunds shipping overages as well. In other words, you’ll likely pay a high amount of shipping up front and then she refunds the extra after she has shipped your package.

Connecting Threads also appears to still have lots of her new 20th Anniversary line in stock!

I also color matched a few solids from our local quilt shop this time.

The red is Kona in Flame.
The green is Kona in Kiwi.
The yellow is Bella solids in Yellow.
The light blue is Bella solids in Ruby Ice.

I recommend the pattern, and I recommend these super sweet fabrics. Check back soon for a finished quilt! I’m hoping this one goes fast.
