How to make a Homemade Tea Towel

While I thoroughly enjoy the tedious sewing of a quilt, this project was simple and refreshing. When Ruby Star Society first released their chore coat toweling, I was intrigued, but the yardage never made it further than my shopping cart on Etsy until this month.

Just recently, though, I purchased the above three weaves of their toweling. If I understand all the descriptions correctly, the toweling is woven with 100% cotton. Since it’s a thick weave, the cotton is more absorbent than, for example, quilting cotton.

I purchased mine from Sojo Fabrics. Mary offered the toweling in 3/4 yard cuts. It’s the perfect length for a tea towel.

You can find plenty of other places on Etsy that carry the toweling yardage as well. Please ensure that the listing you purchase is labeled with ‘toweling’ in the description. There are plenty of options for just ‘chore coat’ yardage, but I think the toweling is a bit of a thicker weave designed for better absorption.

So what makes this such a simple project? When you purchase yardage, the sides come hemmed. You just need to hem each end.

I simply rolled the fabric slightly to bury the raw edge. I then stitched it down with my sewing machine. Because of the variation in color in the weave of the fabric, the white thread I used is barely noticeable even on the blue toweling.

I’ve been using them in my kitchen for a couple weeks now. They absorb well, and I’m still very pleased with how simple it was to update a few towels in the kitchen.
