Half Square Triangles, Hand Quilting, and a Big Finish for Me

On January 26, 2020, I sewed the last stitch on this quilt. This is the first large quilt I have entirely hand quilted, and I actually finished it friends. I have no regrets, and I’ve enjoyed so many moments slowly stitching away. You can’t be in a hurry when you decide to hand quilt a huge quilt.

I went back and looked at some blog posts, and it appears I finished the quilt top in the middle of November of 2018.

I think I started cutting blocks for this quilt in July of 2018.

In other words, this was a long winded project. I learned a lot through this process. One thing for sure…I have not grown weary of hand quilting, and I’ve already started hand quilting two other quilts. Here is the winter quilt I’m working on, and here is my flying geese quilt.

Before I move on, here are a list of posts with many details on the quilt blocks and size. They tell the process I used. You’ll also find links for all my favorite hand quilt supplies.

The most common question I receive on this quilt is what kind of denim I used. This denim is from Art Gallery Fabrics and called Endless Paradise.

There are not a lot of shops carrying Endless Paradise in denim, but Fat Quarter Shop was one that still had some.

All the white is simply Kona Cotton in white. The backing is Essex Linen in Chambray. I one hundred percent recommend this linen. It is beautiful. It adds texture, and it’s the perfect neutral blue. The binding is called Flower Shop, Bloomin Times in mist by Patty Sloninger. I’ve used it on multiple projects and haven’t grown weary of it yet.

All the other fabrics? They are simply a variety of florals. Some may be available here and there, but most of these florals are going to be harder to find. They are a couple years old now.

I didn’t put a lot of thought into the colors or patterns of the flowers. I simply wanted a floral quilt. Since all the patterns are broken up by the somewhat neutral denim and white, I was not so concerned about the flow of the florals.

The photo above, though, shows my very favorite floral from the quilt, and this one is still available here and there. It’s a Rifle Paper Co print from their Amalfi line. It’s called Herb Garden in natural. It’s one of the few prints I have over a yard of just sitting on my shelf. I’m fearful to use it up.

This quilt was made for our living room. It sits draped over the back of our couch right now. Half the quilts I make usually go for sale in my Etsy Shop, and they always take priority when I’ve taken an order for one. It was nice to finish one for our home and have something that feels new in our living room.

I have one partially finished quilt top and two quilts I’m hand quilting right now. The next debate though…do I make a quilt for our new little baby girl or do I sew a new quilt for our bed? I have fabric for both already. 🙂

I’ll leave you with a full size picture of this quilt. Maybe you can tell from the picture that this quilt has become a favorite for building forts in our home. It’s huge and perfect for a large roof. 🙂 The boys were as excited about this one being finished as I was!

  1. Have to say I adore this quilt. The fabrics and design take me back to a simpler time that I for one miss. My grandmother hand quilted and I’m extremely lucky to be a keeper of a few quilts she made. The quilts are near 100 years old I think. My Mom and sister also enjoy quilt making.
I enjoy making simplistic quilt tops but not so sure I can commit to hand quilting an entire top. However, I do enjoy the labor of love you put into it. So glad I came across your site and designs.
    Take care.

    1. Thanks Julie! My favorite is Warm and Natural Cotton Batting: https://amzn.to/2Ppv7VP

Ever since Covid, I’ve had a bit of trouble finding it readily available. I tried the 100% Unbleached Cotton from the Tuscany Collection, and I feel it’s very comparable to Warm & Nathrual. This one I purchased from Fat Quarter Shop: http://shrsl.com/2f5h5

I have learned that quality makes a difference in quilts. I purchased an off brand cotton batting not too long ago from a local craft store, and it just wasn’t the same. We all have different preferences, though, so find what you like best. Hopefully these links give you a start!
